According to Design Trends, the biggest interior-design trends for 2017 will include natural texture and colors, vintage looks, minimalist bathrooms, retro furniture, and muted paint tones. Though these trends are just that, they usually indicate a shift or change in the popularity of certain styles. Whether these trends will have staying power is anyone’s guess, but here are a few that we see making a showing in the upcoming year.
Gold
Gold is back as an excellent way to add luxury and richness to a home’s interior. Gold accents add drama, and because gold is a warm color, it partners with many palettes. Head over to Houzz to see more than 140,000 photos of how gold is incorporated into home design.
Mixed Metals
The mantra “never mix metals” has become “mix metals, but mix them wisely.” Copper, gold, silver, brass, bronze, and more — there is a way to use different metals in your home design. In fact, mixing metals can add depth and interest to your décor. The School of Decorating blog has some advice, including choosing a dominant metal, mixing textures, and using natural iron as a neutral black. Sophisticated Colors
“On the color front, sophisticated hues are poised to take center stage,” according to Elle Décor, citing Behr’s “confident, composed and comfortable” palettes for 2017. And Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is Shadow 2117-30, a rich, dark amethyst. The Sherman-Williams 2017 Paint of the Year is “poised taupe,” described as “if brown and gray had a baby.” These colors point to the trend of natural and sophisticated looks.
Mixed Flooring
A mash-up of hardwood and tile — who would have thought of that? But the effects are lovely, and the trend is making its way into homes. This flooring treatment takes segmented floors away and integrates the two different textiles.
Color-Blocked Kitchen Cabinets
One Kings Lane says that a tuxedo kitchen design “contains all the same elements as its sartorial namesake: monochromatic color-blocking, timeless style, and universal appeal in its elegance and simplicity.” Most commonly, this involves white (or lighter colored) upper cabinets and black (or darker colored) bottom cabinets. And, according to Inman, this will be a trend in 2017. Inman also points to mixed hardware finishes; hidden appliances; and bright, light colors as more top kitchen-design trends.
More Natural, Darker Bathrooms
According to InteriorZine.com, bathrooms that combine materials — the organic and the modern — will be popular in the upcoming year. Mixing materials and textures seems to be a theme in 2017 (see the aforementioned flooring trend), and in the bathroom, this means combining warm wood with ceramic tiles. InteriorZine.com also projects that gray will be the most trendy color of the year, and that matte, nude, and neutral colors will be popular.
